The Summer School 2012 takes place from October 17th - 27th at the DAZ, German Center for Architecture in Berlin following an invitation by the center's director Matthias Böttger.

This year's main editor is Flavio Albanese, Italian architect and former editor-in-chief of Domus Magazine. He would like to investigate with us the topic Love - Intimacy and Seduction in Urban Landscape.

The main goal of the Summer School is to design and visualize the topic in form of a publication. The departure point is that while nature has traditionally been idealised as erotic, modernity has created erotic environments in the form of cities. Urban spaces, Albanese argues, carry with them myriad erotic currents that enable exchange across economic and cultural boundaries. With the rise of the so-called 'Generic City', however, erotic currents are more and more characterized by a clean and flexible exchange mechanism.

Is it still possible to talk about love in urban landscape?

"The city used to be the great sexual hunting ground. The Generic City is like a dating agency: it efficiently matches supply and demand. Orgsasm instead of agony: there is progress. The most obscene possibilities are announced in the cleanest typograph; Helvetica has become pornographic."

Rem Koolhaas, "S,M,L,XL",
essay "The Generic City", 1994.

The work flow is similar to last year: the 20 participants are divided into 7 groups, which develop the different chapters of the publication. Each group works under the creative and artistic direction of Nicolas Bourquin and Thibaud Tissot. Each day, experts are invited to discuss a specific topics of editorial design with the students. We are glad to welcome Milo Keller (director of photography, ECAL, Lausanne), Emmanuel Rey and Ian Party from Swiss Typefaces and Chiara Medioli from Fedrigoni Paper.

On Saturday October 20th at 7 pm., a public conference with international speakers will be held in our Workshop space. Beatrice Galilee (chief Curator of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale) and Milo Keller (Director of Photography Studies, ECAL and working in collaboration with Julien Gallico in Paris) will discuss the visual languages of magazines and books on love in today’s cities. You are all welcome to visit us then, and have a drink with us!

We will print the publication on Friday 26th of October at our partnering printing house Europrint and present it to the public on the 27th at 7 pm. at the DAZ, Scharoun Saal, 2nd courtyard, ground floor. Köpenicker Str. 48/49, 10179 Berlin-Mitte.
